Or are you a witness, e.g. a nursery school teacher, a teacher, a trainer or a social worker? A private hearing is one way in which you can report this to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse Issues.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-prj-pt-gutenberg-blocks-linkbutton\"><div class=\"content\"><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-prj-pt-gutenberg-blocks-textbox alignwide wp-block-cover\"><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container\"><div><div class=\"content\"><h2 class=\"header\">What is a private hearing?<\/h2><p class=\"main-text\"><br>The main focus of the work of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse Issues centres on private hearings with survivors. Even though the name sounds very formal in German: it has nothing to do with an interrogation. It&#8217;s not like reporting to the police. You don&#8217;t have to provide any evidence that your story is true. We will believe you! Confidential hearings are discussions that are held in a safe and secure environment and they last for approximately two hours. They can be held on-site or as a video call. The hearings are conducted by two members from the reappraisal inquiry or by hearing officers. During hearings, it is the people participating who decide what they want to tell and what they do not want to tell. Sharing your own experiences can help to ensure that children and adolescents will be better protected in the future. The Inquiry wants to acknowledge the suffering and injustice that you experienced by listening to you. Everything that is said will be treated confidentially and will be included in the Inquiry&#8217;s reports without giving any names or locations.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-prj-pt-gutenberg-blocks-linkbutton alignwide\"><div class=\"content\"><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-prj-pt-gutenberg-blocks-textbox alignwide wp-block-cover\"><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container\"><div><div class=\"content\"><h2 class=\"header\">What is the exact procedure and what happens to the story after the hearing?<\/h2><p class=\"main-text\"><br><strong>1st step: Registering<\/strong><br>Please provide us with some initial information about yourself by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aufarbeitungskommission.de\/en\/your-story\/a-private-hearing\/online-registering\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-dim-color\">registering online<\/mark><\/a>. Alternatively, your contact details and information can also be provided by a person you trust (e.g. partner, psychotherapist). You can download the registration form <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aufarbeitungskommission.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Anmeldeformular_EN_bf.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/mark><br>We would also like to know the time period in which the abuse occurred and whether it happened in the family or in an institution. We need this information so that we can prepare the hearings correctly. It has no other purpose. When you contact us, you will have the option of letting us know whether you would like us to call you, send you an e-mail or a letter and when you would like us to contact you.<br>If you do not want to tell us your name, you are welcome to discuss with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aufarbeitungskommission.de\/en\/your-story\/service-hotline-processing\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-dim-color\">service hotline staff<\/mark><\/a> how you can participate in a hearing without using your real name.<br><br><strong>3rd step: Private hearing<\/strong><br>The conversation will be held in a safe and secure environment. This means that it will not be in public. You can bring a friend, family member or another person with you to the private hearing to provide support. We will reimburse you and your companion for any accommodation and travelling costs incurred.<br>Specialist counselling centres selected by us will provide on-site support on the day of the hearing if required. The relevant specialist counselling centre will be disclosed to you when you receive the invitation. You can end the conversation at any time, even without giving a reason.<br>If you agree, we will record the hearing on a dictating machine and write down what you have told us as well. Everything you tell us will remain confidential. Your story will be included in our reports without any names and locations (see step 5: Report).<br><br><strong>4th step: Contact with us after the private hearing, if wanted<\/strong><br>If you wish, a staff member from a specialist child sexual abuse counselling centre will contact you a few days after the hearing. The staff member will ask you how you are doing and, if necessary, help you to find support, e.g. from specialist counselling centres in your area.<br><br><strong>5th step: Report<\/strong><br>Your experiences are central to coming to terms with it. With your help, we can inform society and raise awareness about the extent, nature and consequences of child sexual abuse. The Inquiry reports regularly to the public, presents its findings and also makes practical recommendations. Your anonymised story will be evaluated for this purpose. The evaluation will be included in our reports.<br>If we quote you verbatim, we will only do so with your consent. We will only quote you without mentioning your name or any other information that would identify you. This also applies to the names of other people and the naming of specific locations. If you expressly wish us to mention your name, we will be happy to do so as long as this does not infringe the rights of third parties.<br><br><strong>6th step: Your message matters!<\/strong><br>Perhaps it will become important for you to tell us something else after the confidential hearing. More than two-thirds (67%) of the survivors named the family as the context of the child sexual abuse offence. Institutions were named as the context in 31% of contacts, the social environment in 18%, organised structures (including organised ritual structures) in 14% and external perpetrators in 7% of the cases.
